WORKING WOMEN IN CHENNAI: A SOCIO-ECONOMIC STUDY

Abstract:
Women’s participation in the labour market is a key determinant of inclusive socio-economic development. Chennai, a rapidly expanding metropolitan city, has witnessed increasing women’s workforce participation, driven by higher educational levels, service-sector expansion, and shifting social norms. However, persistent challenges—gender wage gaps, occupational segregation, safety concerns, mobility barriers, and work–life imbalance—continue to restrict women’s economic empowerment.

This study presents an in-depth socio-economic analysis based on primary data (N = 120) and secondary sources including PLFS reports, Census data, Tamil Nadu Labour Department statistics, and relevant scholarly literature. Statistical tools such as percentage analysis, charts, and a Chi-square test were applied to examine the association between educational attainment and employment type. Results confirm that higher education significantly increases access to formal-sector jobs, yet structural inequalities remain. The study concludes with actionable policy recommendations for improving workplace conditions and strengthening the socio-economic status of women in Chennai.
